Koda Koi Farm and Hosokai koi farm

Morning day three at Koda Koi Farm: Koda Koi Farm produces primarily Gosanke (Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa) They also produce kumonryu, beni-kumonryu, Kujaku, and other varieties. The farm was started in 1920 by Mr. Hoshino’s great grandfather. They have 30 mudponds for growing Tosai, 8 mudponds for growing neisai, and 10 mudponds for growing koi 3 years and older. This harvest was 25,000 tosai, 5000 neisai, 70 sansai, and 35 yonsai and older.

Mr. Hoshino debates on what to charge me for the first group of koi that I selected and bowled.

Afternoon Monday at Hosokai Koi Fish Farm
Hosokai is a famous asagi breeder. His asagi usually win best in Variety in the All Japan Show each January. Hosokai is also well know for his goshiki. He has a new style goshiki that has such an intense thick hi plate that the net pattern appears only outside the red kohaku pattern. Hosokai is one of Niigata’s larger breeders with over 100 mudponds. I am scheduled to help them pull two ponds this Saturday so watch for photos of his big mudpond with 45 Jumbo koi. There total production includes a large number of varieties ranging in quality from good pond fish to show winners.

 

This is outside their main show greenhouse. The patriarch of the family is Mr. Shouichi Hosokai (on the left) and his son Masaru. I am the small one in the middle.
